New Server

Posted by Michael Dale on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 10:52 AM

We've finally got all the hardware ready and setup for the new server:

  • Dual Althon MP 1800+
  • 2gb ECC DDR Ram
  • 3x80gb SATA in Raid 5 for boot, off a HighPoint 1640
  • 3x300gb SATA in Raid 5 for data, off a RaidCore 4852

So yeah. Our new file/mail/sharepoint server!

Just out of interest...
Is 240gb really needed just for booting (which I am assuming just means Server OS install and not much else)? Or will it also do other things like hold the mail database?

Kitten, with three disks in a RAID 5 you lose one third of the total storage space across all three drives to parity data leaving you with 160 GB in this case. Still a bit for a boot drive.

It is really 160gb, as it is raid 5. The mail will be stored on this drive too.

SharePoint eh... a Windows server?

Of course. The current server is a Windows box too.

Yeah well, one of the new 80GB drives just dropped out of the array....thank god for RAID5 :(

The beeping from the raid card can be heard throughout the house.

Looks like it is all working now. We replaced the PSU with something that could cope ;)

The data raid doubled in speed too. Coolies.
